Cordelle Edwin hasn’t stopped talking about Taryn Brumfitt’s documentary, Embrace, since she viewed it at the recent New Zealand International Film Festival.
So much so that the Monterey’s assistant manager has scored five screenings for the Howick cinema.
Embrace is written and directed by Australian wife and mother of three, Taryn Brumfitt.
Cordelle says it’s a true story about Taryn’s effort to gain the perfect body and subsequently deciding that the effort was not worth it.
“It went viral on Facebook,” Cordelle says.
So she made a trailer and got a response from close to 9000 Kickstarter pledgers to fund the documentary.
“It’s something that if you see the trailer, most women want to see it,” Cordelle says.
Embrace, Taryn says, is a social impact documentary that explores the issue of body image.
The story is told from her point of view as she traverses the globe talking to experts, women in the street and well-known personalities about the alarming rates of body image issues that are seen in people of all body types.
She was shocked by their responses, such as “fat”, “imperfect”, “disgusting”.
“The overwhelming majority of the women I speak to are unhappy with their bodies,” she says.
“But why? “Because every day we are bombarded with images and advertising that presents an unattainable ideal of what our bodies should look like.
“A growing number of health and medical professionals are concerned that digitally altered images in the media can contribute to unrealistic body image expectations, which can ultimately lead to eating disorders and other serious mental health issues.”
The documentary had its world premiere at the 2016 Sydney Film Festival where it made it into the festival directors’ top five picks and was nominated for the Documentary Australia Foundation Award for Best Documentary.
Embrace will screen from August 19-30 at the Monterey Cinema, Fencible Drive, Howick.
