For meat lovers, it’s a dream come true but for others, it could be the wurst thing imaginable.
Meatstock is returning to Auckland’s ASB showgrounds on February 24 and 25 and Howick’s Hotboxed Meatheads will be hoping to carve up the competition in the New Zealand Barbecue Wars event.
Brennan Thomas of the Hotboxed Meatheads says the competition will be a first for the team who decided to give it a go and throw their hats into the ring.

“We’ve never done it competitively before but it’s one of our favourite pastimes so we’ll see how we go.”
The team consists of four locals, two of whom work together along with two friends. They’ll all be hoping to smoke out their 49 rivals in their battle to be crowned the country’s best barbecue team.
Members of the community will judge the barbecue wars and all judges attend the Australian Barbecue Alliance (ABA) judges course for free to learn how to assess the best in barbecue for each protein, cut and flavour.
Categories include beef — brisket, cheek or beef ribs, lamb — any cut, pork — shoulder or neck, served pulled, chopped or sliced or a combination of any, pork ribs — baby back, spare or St Louis, and chicken — any cut.
The two day meat-filled extravaganza features a backdrop of live bands, cooking demonstrations, live entertainment and BBQ inspired food trucks and craft beer.
There’ll be no room for misteaks with a prize pool of more than $8000 up for grabs — including $1000 cash on the line for the Grand Champion.
