London 1887 and a young girl, Valentine Grey, arrives in England. She's been brought up in the remote and sunny climes of India and finds being forced into corsets and skirts in damp and cold country insufferable. Sandi Toksvig is a well-loved british author and playwright, and will appear at the Auckland Writer's Festival on Saturday 17 May in the evening.
The Food of Love Cookery School, by Nicky Pellegrino
Luca Amore runs cooking holidays in the baroque Sicilian mountain town of Fasolino. He's taught many people how to cook the dishes passed down to him by generations of Amore women. Nicky Pellegrino is well-known as an author and reviewer here in New Zealand, and will be holding a luncheon at the Auckland Writer's Festival on Friday 16 May.
The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon, by Alexander McCall Smith
As Botswana awaits the familiar blessing of the rains and the resumption of the eternal cycle, seismic upheaval is taking place at the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Alexander McCall-Smith is the Scottish author of over 60 books on a wide array of subjects. He will deliver a keynote speech at the Auckland Writer's Festival on the evening of Friday 16 May.
