‘Matariki Starlight Jazz Concert’ takes to the stage on Saturday 21st July at Auckland’s Holy Trinity Cathedral. This fundraising event blends both Pakeha and M?ori artists together in an exciting programme of music sung in Te Reo M?ori and English.
All performers and musicians featured in the concert have donated their time towards supporting the development and organization of a ‘bigger picture’ cause – Wahine Walk for Wellness – Footsteps supporting the ripple effects of mental wellness’.
The intention behind the Wahine Walk for Wellness Project is to create a walk for our Nation, where participants nominate the distance they intend to walk then go about seeking sponsorship per kilometre. Over a 4 month period participants may choose to walk the whole of the Te Araroa trail or aspects of it – or they may choose to design their own trail within their community, town or city.

Funds raised will be managed and distributed into communities by a Charitable Trust to further support existing support networks, or to create new support networks that enable the ‘Caretakers’ of the mentally unwell to reach out, connect, draw strength from, and support others who are walking a similar journey.
Headlining the Matariki Starlight Jazz concert is Whirimako Black.
Whirimako has performed all around the world on numerous projects including the internationally successful One Giant Leap album which celebrates cultural diversity. She is an award winning songwriter and artist having achieved Best M?ori Album and Best Jazz Album at the NZ Music Awards and a coveted Silver Scroll award in song writing for Best M?ori Composition.
Other highlights of the concert will be appearances by some of New Zealand’s finest jazz performing artists including Allana Goldsmith, Maria O’Flaherty, Denis Hepi, Julie Mason, Phil Broadhurst, Makareta Umbers, and June Hayes – producer of this event, and mastermind behind the Wahine Walk for Wellness Project.
Supporting the artists is an ‘A List’ lineup of musicians including pianists Kevin Field & Ben Fernandez, bassists Olivier Holland and Aaron Coddel, drummers Ron Samsom and Neill Williamson, guitarist Dixon Nacey, and Kelly Kahukiwa on puoro and saxophone.
