Set in 1950s New York, Carol documents a forbidden love affair between two women from very different backgrounds. Starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, the film is based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt and follows the story of an aspiring photographer and her turbulent relationship with an older woman who’s going through a challenging divorce from her husband.
After Carol Aird (Blanchett), glamorously draped in a mink coat, leaves her gloves behind in a Manhattan department store, shop assistant Therese Belivet (Mara) uses the sales slip with Carol’s name and address on it to return them to her that evening. From there, the pair form a close bond which rapidly develops into a passionate love affair. With the conventional norms of the 50s challenging Therese and Carol’s attraction, their worlds come crumbling down as a private investigator hired by her suspicious ex-husband reveals everything and leaves Carol fighting for custody of their daughter Rindy. In cinemas February 11.
Entries close Wednesday 27th January.
