The eleventh of all zodiac animals, the year of the dog marks prosperity, loyalty and trust. According to one well-versed story in Chinese mythology, the Jade Emperor determined the animals of the calendar year, based on the order in which they arrived to his party.
While Monkey, Rooster and Dog were preoccupied in another country, they eventually set off to the party together. Because they arrived en masse, the Jade Emperor went by the order they met the God in the other country. Thus, Dog became eleventh.
While the allure of China may feel far, far away from home, simply make your way to Auckland City, walk through the ornate red double doors on Federal Street, and you'll discover a restaurant that delivers on its namesake.
'Huami' meaning 'nectar' in Mandarin, is an authentic eatery worth its weight. The team here collaborated with notable hospitality experts – namely Masu's Nic Watt, executive chef Jeff Tan, restaurant manager Kai Zhao and master sommelier Cameron Douglas – to channel the glamour of 1930s Shanghai à la Zhou Xuan.
The menu boasts the very best of provincial China, showcasing inspired cuisine from Canton, Sichuan, Huaiyang and Beijing, while using traditional Chinese preparation methods.
To celebrate Chinese New Year, Huami’s executive chef Jeff Tan has created a special set menu, available for four days only from Friday, 16th until Monday, 19th of February.
The menu features special dishes such as Chinese Happiness Yee Sang salad, fruit wood-roasted Peking duck, braised supreme seafood treasure soup, wok-fried rice and cured meat with lotus flavour, double-boiled ginger tea with glutinous rice dumpling and pan-fried sticky rice cake for dessert.
Making this year’s celebrations even more unique is the addition of the Martell Sidecar. It’s the first time this sidecar has been seen in New Zealand, serving Huami-inspired Martell cocktails.
For those craving an authentic Chinese tipple, Huami will be serving their very own exclusive rice wine, Huami Baiju, sourced exclusively from Maotai village (???????). This will be sold for Chinese New Year and made available onwards on their special Baijiu list.
