Sleepyhead has been helping Kiwis get a great night's sleep for over 80 years. This Sleep Week they want to talk about your sleep habits and whether or not you get enough. According to a recent sleep survey, 40 per cent of Kiwis reported symptoms of insomnia. This is because most of us aren't getting enough sleep, and when we do doze off, it's in short segments that aren't always restful.

There are many things that could be contributing to your bad night's sleep such as:
- Too much light, noise or temperature imbalance in your bedroom at night are major causes of sleep loss. Having your room at just the right temperature (between 18 and 22 degrees is optimal) with silence and darkness is a great way to relax your body and mind, helping you to sleep.
- Another factor is mental stress and anxiety. This could range from a traumatic event like a break-up, to worrying about family or work. Try doing some mental exercises before bed. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth in a comfortable position or simply write down your worries before you head to bed to get them off your mind.
- Sleeping badly and feeling drowsy through the day? If you’re not getting enough exercise, this could be the reason, so get out those running shoes and hit the pavement! Even 10 minutes a day can help.
- Along with exercise, your diet contributes a lot to sleep habits. If you are not eating properly you are unlikely to sleep well at night. The more fat in your diet, the more you will toss and turn.
- If you have allergies, you will know the effect these have on your sleep. Sleeping on a bed older than 10 years will become home to moisture, dust mites, bed bugs and other nasties which will be triggering your allergies and possibly keeping you awake at night.
- Sleeping on a bed which has passed its use by date will cause a lot of discomfort while you sleep and in turn affect the way you perform during the day. If your bed lacks the correct support, this will not only lead to increased partner disturbance as you toss and turn or roll together, but will also take its toll on your body leaving you feeling uncomfortable and in pain as pressure points affect your body as a result of unsupportive mattress components. One third of our lives are spent in bed so it’s worth putting some thought into what sort of life your mattress has had.
- Don’t forget your head! Our pillow is a bed for our head and makes up 25% of the sleeping surface, so make sure you are sleeping on a good quality, supportive pillow.
