Ice cream lovers Sharon Gideon and Midori Willoughby met at a dinner party in Wellington in 2011, quickly bonding over their shared passion for frozen delights. The duo soon realised that they were both pretty good at making ice cream and together they founded Wooden Spoon Boutique Freezery.
Wooden Spoon started off distributing their ice cream around Wellington through a monthly subscription service, but the demand for their hand-crafted ice cream made from high quality, seasonal and local ingredients soon outgrew this and the company began producing retail tubs in 2013. Wooden Spoon’s award-winning ice cream is now available from supermarkets around New Zealand.
Alongside their national success, Wooden Spoon have retained a strong local community focus. They support and collaborate with Wellington producers Zany Zeus, Fix & Fogg and Peoples Coffee, and work with Kaibosh Food Rescue on the Hooray Programme to help kids from Wellington Community Groups to celebrate the best day of the year – their birthday.
