Hey parents and grandparents! Surely you remember Coco the Monkey®? Of course you do.
Well the iconic Coco Pops® cereal is nigh on 50+ years old now and like many a baby boomer, Coco the Monkey® is having a makeover to keep up with the times.
But don’t worry, the delicious ‘chocolatey fun’ in the cocoa coated puffed rice cereal remains unchanged.
Kellogg’s NZ marketing and innovation manager Julian Ng says Coco Pops remain as popular as ever.
“Coco’s been living on the same packaging for quite some time now, and it really is time to update the imagery and take the brand boldly into the modern day.
“But Coco Pops is still the same delicious treat it always has been… Coco Pops remain a great way to turn a daily milk intake in to chocolatey fun so the family drink theirs up to the very last drop,” Ng says. “They’re still absolutely delicious – just like a chocolate milkshake only crunchy.”
Coco the Monkey’s journey to 2015 has been one of only few changes over the decades. Coco Pops was first marketed in the United States as Coco Krispies and Coco made his first appearance as a chimpanzee named Jose.
Other mascots replaced Coco over the years but the cheeky image made a return to the packaging in 1963 in countries where the product is known as Coco Pops. Since then he has had several makeovers.
This year’s incarnation depicts Coco with a sporty new cap – have the years taken their toll on the spikey haircut? – and a jazzy new 3D look reflecting modern tastes.
The new Coco Pops packaging includes the product’s health star rating and will appear on shelves from early July.
