A senior Otago University researcher says a six-month clinical trial of an all-natural plant-based osteoarthritis product has further built on an earlier study’s “exciting findings”.
The results of the Otago University’s Dunedin School of Medicine’s six-month study were recently published in the peer reviewed New Zealand Medical Journal.
It follows a previously published 12-week study of the plant-based remedy Arthrem in patients with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee. That study showed Arthrem treatment to be associated with significant pain reduction.
Twenty eight patients from that double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study went on to complete the six-month trial.
“In addition to showing few side effects associated with long-term use, all of which were minor, the study also showed there was a continued improvement in people’s conditions. That’s unusual because normally one would expect to see improvements plateau more quickly when taking a plant-based product.”
Professor Stebbings says that although longer and bigger studies are needed, and extension study findings strongly suggest that Arthrem has excellent anti-inflammatory properties. “This potentially implies that it could be used for a range of inflammatory conditions rather than osteoarthritis alone.”
Arthrem is manufactured by NZX-listed New Zealand company Promisia Integrative Limited. It is made from the company’s proprietary extract of Artemisia annua plants, which are grown in Tanzania. It is the world’s first and only product to specifically formulate a joint support product from this plant.
Julie’s Story
julie-carlyle2Julie Carlyle had been suffering osteoarthritic niggles but was leading a full life until she was hit by a car and seriously injured one of her legs two years ago.
This caused the Dunedin woman’s arthritis to get far worse. It not only affected the damaged leg, but also the other one because it had been put under increased strain while Julie’s mobility was compromised.
Julie was in her late forties at the time of the accident and had been physically active but that all changed as her arthritis worsened.
“It causes a lot of throbbing pain every day, so is not only unpleasant but has limited my ability to walk and bike,” she says.
Therapy on her damaged leg was initially covered by ACC but now it refuses to cover any further treatment, claiming that the osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear rather than the accident.
Julie has been taking anti-inflammatory drugs but says they do not stop the pain, so she decided to try Arthrem.
The first time she used it for a few months and the aches and pains went away, but she slipped out of the habit of taking the twice-daily pills and the problems soon returned.
She has been back on Arthrem for the past three months and says her pain has gone again.
“I’m walking more now and hope to get back into biking soon. My goal is to build up my strength again, which is now much easier because my legs aren’t throbbing any more.”
