Tauranga Musica is presenting John Chen at the Graham Young Youth Theatre at Tauranga Boys’ College this month.
On Saturday, May 17 at 3pm, John – the youngest-ever winner of the prestigious Sydney International Piano Competition – will perform for a Tauranga audience.
John has also won prizes for best performance of works by Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Chamber Music and the 19th/20th Century Concerto. Prior to this, John won the Rotorua Concerto competition in 2003.

His Sydney win came close on the heels of his first-prize placement in the Third Lev Vlassenko Australasian Piano Competition in Brisbane the year before.
In the years since, John has become one of a few worldwide whose career has matched its auspicious competition beginnings.
He has a formidable profile in Australia where he has worked with major orchestras, and returns each year to perform with one or more of New Zealand’s top orchestras.
The Tauranga programme comprises of music by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and more.
