Review by Sarah in the Eldernet office
When I first started reading Julia Gillards book, My Story, I had great enthusiasm and was really enjoying getting an inside look ‘behind the scenes' of how parliament works - or at least the Australian parliament. I craved goss - not so much in the first few chapters and I eventually found the book less and less appealing as it became very apparent that the book was coming across as a defence of Gillards time involved.
The book started by Gillard giving her reasons for wanting to overturn Kevin Rudd, and how the reasons are backed by her colleagues. She also talks about the amount of work she was doing trying to keep Kevin Rudd inline despite his odd requests.
She then moves on to talk about her time as Prime Minister. She was very passionate in this part of the book and I personally enjoyed the parts where she remembers what she was wearing, such as borrowing jewellery from a workmate before a big announcement. I found these parts far more interesting than the actual politics! Although, I think that probably says more about me then her writing!!
Over all I wanted to be interested in this book but I just wasn't. I was expecting more juice but it was not to be. I did enjoy reading about Julia but perhaps next time around I will stick to the magazine articles about her personal life then the books about politics!
