Along the way Robert Stewart has found time to race yachts and cars, start a radio station, help drive the 1974 Commonwealth Games, chair the Canterbury Manufacturers Association, become involved in funding neurological research, chair the government's health research funding body, pick up an ONZM and be honoured as an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur.

Sir Robert Stewart is the founder and chairman of SKOPE Industries. Based in Christchurch, SKOPE is one of New Zealand's leading manufacturers, of leading-edge refrigeration units, and a successful exporter.
Robert Stewart was a founder of the Christchurch private radio station Radio Avon and has also been heavily involved in car racing all his adult life. He is currently the chairman of the Health Research Council which supports research that has the potential to improve health outcomes and delivery of healthcare, and to produce economic gain for New Zealand. Sir Robert Stewart, KNZM is also a Patron of the independent Canterbury Medical Research which funds new research that will make a difference to people's lives - now and for future generations. Founded in 1960, Canterbury Medical Research has funded nearly $20 million to health research. His wife, Barbara, has been actively involved in Christchurch local body politics and in the city's arts and culture life. They have three children, two of whom, Guy and Alexandra, are actively involved in the SKOPE business.
Robert Stewart was knighted for services to manufacturing in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2014.
