We are celebrating the WORD Christchurch Writers & Readers Festival programme announcement. Ruth Reichl is their headliner, and we have two wonderful books up for grabs from her, thanks to Allen & Unwin.
Delicious! is Reichl's first foray into fiction, here is the blurb: 'Billie Breslin has just landed her dream at Delicious!, the most iconic food magazine in New York. In an unfortunate turn of events Billie's career barely gets started before the magazine is shut down and what looks like an interim job to tidy up as the doors close turns out to be an amazing journey to a magical, life-changing discovery. In a hidden room in the magazine's library, Billie finds the letters of Lulu Swan, a plucky twelve-year-old who corresponded with the legendary chef James Beard during World War II. Lulu's letters inspire Billie to come to terms with her own truths - about her self, her adored big sister and her ability to open her heart to love. '
Garlic and Sapphires is Reichl's memoir of life as a restaurant reviewer: 'When Reichl took over from the formidable and aloof Bryan Miller as the New York Times' restaurant reviewer, she promised to shake things up. And so she did. Gone were the days when only posh restaurants with European chefs were reviewed. Reichl, with a highly developed knowledge and love of Asian cuisine from her years as a West Coast food critic, began to review the small simple establishments that abound in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Many loved it, the Establishment hated it, but her influence was significant.'

To enter, please email info@booksellers.co.nz, with 'Ruth Reichl' in the subject, and tell us the name of your favourite restaurant, as well as giving us your (actual) physical address. We will draw the prize next Thursday 24 July, at 12 noon.
The winner of YA fiction titles Out of Sight, by Benedict Reid; Spark, by Rachael Craw (Walker Books); Donnel's Promise, by Anna Mackenzie (Longacre), and one of my favourite junior fiction titles so far this year, Conrad Cooper's Last Stand, by Leonie Agnew (Puffin) was Belinda Whitehead. Congratulations Belinda, who would love to be in Bali reading these books.
