Is Winning Just About Luck?
Not entirely! While luck plays a part in random draws, seasoned "compers" know that strategy, consistency, and creativity significantly increase your odds of winning. Some Kiwis win multiple prizes every month - and it is not because they are luckier than you.
What Separates Winners From Everyone Else
They Enter Consistently
15-20 minutes daily beats a monthly binge
They Target Smart
Local comps and creative entries have better odds
They Stay Organised
Dedicated email, autofill, and spam checks
They Read the Rules
No wasted time on ineligible competitions
Tip 1 & 2: Consistency is King
The more competitions you enter, the higher your chances. It is pure mathematics. But randomly entering whenever you remember is not as effective as building a daily habit.
Enter Every Day
Set aside 15-20 minutes each morning with your coffee. Make it a ritual. Daily draws reset every 24 hours - if you miss a day, you miss that chance forever.
Use Autofill Tools
Speed matters. Use your browser's autofill or a password manager (LastPass, 1Password) to instantly fill forms. Enter 5x more competitions in the same time.
Pro Tip:
Create a dedicated email address just for competitions (e.g., yourname.comps@gmail.com). This keeps your personal inbox clean and ensures you never miss a "Congratulations!" email buried among bills and work emails.
Tip 3 & 4: Master Creative Entries
"25 words or less" competitions are your secret weapon. Most people skip them because they require effort. That means far fewer entries and much better odds for you.
The Winning Formula for WOL
Judges read thousands of boring entries. Make yours stand out:
Answer the Question
Don't just say "I want to win." Address the specific prompt directly.
Use Humour or Rhyme
Make the judge smile. A clever rhyme sticks in their memory.
Mention the Brand
Judges work for the brand. They love hearing their name used positively.
Check Your Count
26 words = disqualified. Aim for 20-24 to be safe.
Target "Hard to Enter" Competitions
Photo uploads, video submissions, code collection - most people won't bother. The harder the entry, the fewer competitors, the better your odds.
Tip 5 & 6: Target Smarter, Not Harder
Go Local
National competitions have thousands of entries. Local radio giveaways, shopping mall draws, and community newspaper competitions have much smaller pools.
Example: Your odds of winning a $100 voucher from your local Pak'nSave are far higher than winning a car from a global brand.
Read the T&Cs
Don't waste time on competitions you aren't eligible for. Check:
- Age requirements
- Residency rules (NZ only?)
- Closing dates
- Receipt requirements
Tip 7 & 8: Stay Organised
Check Your Spam Folder Weekly
Winning notifications often get filtered as junk mail. Search for keywords like "Congratulations", "Winner", or "Prize" at least once a week. Many prizes go unclaimed because winners never saw the email!
Keep Receipts
Nothing is worse than winning but being disqualified because you threw away a proof of purchase. If a competition mentions receipts, photograph it immediately and store digitally.
