Andrew Joyce, the principal cellist of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) will join the Manukau Symphony Orchestra (MSO) for its final concert of 2015.
The Masters programme will be conducted by Professor Uwe Grodd, including Andrew Joyce performing Elgar’s Cello Concerto. The concerto is a cornerstone of the cello repertoire. Written in 1919, shortly after World War I, it is a masterpiece, filled with complexity in a musical search for the meaning of life.
Professor Grodd and the orchestra have also commissioned a work to celebrate the life of Douglas Lilburn, the father of New Zealand composition. Young local composer, David Grahame Taylor, has written a work titled Soliloquy for Douglas Lilburn. It will be performed for the first time as a tribute to mark the 100th anniversary of Lilburn’s birth.

Following in the footsteps of greatness, while inspiring, imposes a burden on a composer. Brahms felt this way about Beethoven. Since he was also a perfectionist, it took him 14 years to produce his 1st Symphony in 1876.
There are some deliberate references to Beethoven in David Taylor’s work, but Brahms’ masterful touch is also in evidence.
