Let's start honestly - I hated this book. Hated it so much I couldn't even finish it. Even with a couple of flights up my sleeves I choose to re-read the Kia-Ora magazine than read another page of ranting, raving, swearing and showing off by this sycophant.
For those of you not in the know Russell Brand is a British actor/comedian - who is equally loved and loathed. I fall into the second camp. However; I was determined to give him another chance - I thought perhaps it was his accent, or how he came across on TV that may have given me the wrong impression; so, with (I think) a positive attitude I volunteered to review his latest offering.
Brand has big ideas of himself and is fairly sure he has the answer to, or understands the root cause of, all the world problems. He's one of those annoying successful people who loves to drone on about how they have pulled themselves from the mire - the self-effacing carry on drives me bonkers.

Another thing that drives me bonkers is the use of overly flowery language. I LOVE a good wordsmith, and people who have more than one way of turning a phrase can win me over - but Brands use of ridiculously highfaluting words is a complete turn off. I found myself reading passages aloud to my sister and husband (both of whom are highly educated and smart people) to demonstrate the total and utter confusion this elicits in the reader. Neither were impressed and both found him confusing and long-winded.
I think that Brand has written this book to educate those who wish to understand global issues and effect change. But his pleonastic style does just the reverse. This book is almost unintelligible and at best mildly frustrating. I suspect the only people he will ‘convert' are those who think he is wonderful already. This makes this book seem like nothing more than an ego trip.
In the office one of the staff's partners admits to liking Brand - so I'm passing it on to him in the hopes he can offer a more positive review than mine.
Don't cross your fingers!
