Nathan Fa’avae is one of our most successful sportsmen, and in a sport that is just unbelievably hard. He has been the most successful adventure racer in the sport to date winning three World Championships. He has qualified for the Olympics, worked as an Outward Bound Instructor, been a professional athlete and competed in over 30 countries. In early November heads off to Brazil to defend the Adventure Racing title yet again – at 43!
Part-Samoan, was raised in Nelson, and it was as a wayward adolescent that he discovered outdoor adventure. Since then he has never looked back, and has been a full-time adventurer working as an outdoor educator, the owner of multiple adventure-based businesses, and a professional athlete evener since.
Nathan started running marathons at 16-years old and competed in his first endurance triathlon when he was 17. His first competitive sport was mountain biking where he raced extensively from 1990-1996, as a Cross-country racer he won the NZ Junior Title, South Island Championships, was in the NZ Team for 5-years and qualified for the Olympics in 1996 (but didn't compete), in that time he competed in Australia, Asia and North America. Nathan has been a semi-professional and full time professional athlete for 16 years. During that time he has represented New Zealand at 4 different sports, attending 12 World Championships.
