Review by Kaynine.
This is such an enjoyable read. I do admire these people that take on a lifestyle that is so punishing - yet so obviously rewarding and most definitely not for the faint - hearted! We all have this perception of living of the land, raising our children with the local wildlife on the doorstep, growing our own fruit and veggies and raising chikens etc to feed us, how hard can it be?!! Well from reading Robins experiences - damn hard!! But it is so in their blood now, and the hard working , tough as boots Garry still sounds the same, cares deeply about his land and his stock, and lovely that his routine hasn't changed in all these years, even down to the bowl he eats his porridge from before he goes out in the early hours to start his day.
These people were made of tough stuff, but always there to help their neighbours in whatever way they can, that's community at it's best.
Love the bit where Robin thought she was depriving the children of a holiday like other children, so packed a patched old tent and food and took them to the next farm to have some resemblance of a holiday, but once there the kids just moaned and complained because they wanted to go back to their own farm!! oh well what you never have you never miss!!
Hats off to Robin and Garry for making it work and having a hard but wonderful time of it, I love the idea of it for myself, but just know I am a little bit too fond of the home comforts....
