Review by Esther in the Eldernet Office.
This book is divine. There is simply no other word for it. I could barely stop myself from stroking its pages.
Reynolds is obviously a man who loves houses; not just houses but homes - the images in this book sing with personality and life. I could almost smell each home, know what each owner was going to have for dinner that night, and how they liked their tea.
The foreword and introduction are well put together and give you a real grounding from which to read the book and admire these lovely homes. There is also a wonderful collection of images to support the written history and some of the bungalows featured also offer images of the homes in bygone days.
Design details are not forgotten in the photographs or the accompanying text - this book serves to educate and then to delight the reader with perfect and quirky executions of stylistic details. I adored the page on window latches and there is others on chimneys, windows, doors.
There are 20 homes featured in depth in this impressive tome and each of them is delightful - some I'd love to live in and others not my cup of tea - but all of them are presented and written about so lovingly there is no doubt that there would be plenty of tales if those walks could talk.
I really can't recommend this book enough; it would be a wonderful Christmas gift to those who love architecture, those with a passion for NZ history, for those who love excellent photography - for people who love style. This is a coffee table book to impress and to visit again and again and again.
