A past flute and conducting student of Manukau Symphony Orchestra music director, Uwe Grodd, is returning from Wales to lead the orchestra’s next performance.
Tianyi Lu will take over the baton for the orchestra’s Pastoral concert on June 27. She will also conduct Opera Otago’s production of Magic Flute during her return visit to New Zealand.
MSO’s concert begins with Lilburn’s Suite for Orchestra, commissioned in 1955 by the late Professor Charles Nalden. Lilburn’s music conjures up scenes of New Zealand landscapes and sets the ‘pastoral’ theme for the concert.

MSO has a tradition of mentoring young talented musicians and the Pastoral concert features 13-year-olds Joo Eun Kim (cello) and Benedict Lim (violin) playing works which challenge more senior musicians. Their Rococo Variations for Cello and Orchestra by Tchaikovsky, along with Sarasate’s Violin Carmen Concert Fantasy provide a lively contrast to the exquisite beauty in Lilburn’s work and the Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No 3 which follows.
Vaughn Williams’ Pastoral Symphony No. 3 has links to World War I and is both a meditation on the sounds of peace and a beautiful elegy to those who died in the war.
Soprano Jennifer Maybee, recently returned from singing and teaching in London, Canada and Europe, will join the orchestra for this work.
